This week is the 5th week of the Season of Lent, which means Holy Week begins next Sunday March 28. So as you take some time to pray and prepare for this week I wanted to give you all some materials to help with that.
Holy week can be very overwhelming for children and for adults. It is in this week that we recall the Passion of our Lord. And although this is very descriptive and intense we need to remind ourselves and teach our children that the theme of this most scared time is love. This is the truest act of love that was ever given. So tell your children that God loves them so much that he did this to save us and bring us back to communion with Him.
As Jesus is preparing for His Passion and while at the Last Supper, he speaks to his apostles and says, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.” John 15: 13-14.
Jesus is telling His apostles that He will give His life for them (and for us) because it is the supreme act of love. This time of the year is so special and for Christians it is foundational to what we believe.
There are many instances where Christ would go off by Himself to pray or get away from the crowds. We too are called to get away from the “noise” and be with our Lord in an intimate way. So make the lesson of this week be simplicity! Have more silent time in your day, watch less tv/screen time, pray together more, etc. The point being, because this week is so special and different, make it look that way in your home so your kids will know that this is more than just a secular holiday. This package of materials can help you create a retreat like environment for your family during Holy Week REL_DL_HolyWkEasterKit.
Another quick learning lesson for this week is to talk about the Annunciation. The church celebrates this on March 25 and it is Solemnity, meaning this day we hold in high regard.
Briefly, this is the day that we celebrate the Angel Gabriel appearing to Mary and announcing that she will be the Mother of Jesus! For a more detailed description check out this video: Annunciation
Fun fact, if you do the math March 25 is exactly 9 months from December 25… This is by design!
