Stewardship
Minutes
Good afternoon. My name is Jennifer Saunders. You may not recognize
me, but this is not the first time I’ve stood in front of
the church to speak. The last time I stood up here, I read a poem
I wrote for Mother’s Day; however, my last name was Dominesey,
the altar was on your left, and I was in elementary school. I’ve
been a member of St. Nicholas since I was in third grade. I’ve
grown up in this church, and through stewardship, I feel like I’ve
finally begun to grow into this church.
Through the years, I’ve volunteered hours here and there
in an attempt to make a connection within our faith community. I
always felt like something was missing and that I didn’t quite
belong. However, to be completely honest, I never truly committed
myself to anything. Sure, I can justify it by remembering how busy
I was with the business of growing up and all that entails, but
the fact is that I simply had not made stewardship one of my priorities.
Many of you are very active in your children’s schools; as
an elementary school teacher, I realize how vital that role is in
education. I’d like you to consider devoting an hour of your
time to your child’s Christian Formation. Currently, there
are only two positions filled, and as you’ve read in the Bulletin,
this is a total volunteer program. You don’t have to be an
expert in our faith nor as a teacher to get involved; training is
provided.
As a fourth grade catechist last year and a teacher in this summer’s
Vacation Bible School, I fulfilled a need within the church; but
I also fulfilled a need within myself. I found a place to do all
the creative and fun things involved with teaching minus all the
SOL and other administrative pressures. I expanded my “church
family” by about twenty great kids, and I met people that
I can actually wave to in church and say hello.
Many of us live incredibly busy lives, but I promise that any time
you can devote to our parish will truly be a symbiotic relationship.
Please consider making the time to find your own niche in our church
like I’ve found mine.
I’ll be in the Commons after liturgy to answer any questions
you may have for me.
