Stewardship Talk
Pris Poulin
After about 20 years of Navy life where we moved every three or four years and worshiped at a
different Catholic church each time, it was good to settle down in Virginia Beach where we have worshiped at
St. Nicholas for the past 30 years. When we moved into the parish, we felt that it was time to give back to
the church so I offered my services to the nun who was in charge of Christian Formation. Since I was not a
teacher, I offered to be an aide. It seems the teacher in charge of 7th grade class was ill and Sister asked
me to take that class until the teacher recovered. Well, she never returned! After I retired, I again asked
what I could do to help and found there was plenty to keep me busy. I joined the Adult Christian Formation
Committee and after attending two meetings, found that I was the new Chairperson. For many years I helped
Edna Zurschmit with RCIA. Currently I do Liturgy Planning and the Hospital Ministry where we represent
St. Nicholas by taking communion to the hospital patients at Sentara Virginia Beach. St. Nicholas does this
every Saturday and I go once a month. It is a truly rewarding ministry. I am a member of the Ecumanism
Committee and we attend LARC meetings throughout the Diocese. LARC stands for Lutheran Anglican Roman Catholic.
Our most recent endeavor has been to meet with the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church where we are learning
about each other’s faiths. Bob and I are members of a team doing Meals on Wheels and we deliver a hot meal
and a bag lunch to those who are unable to cook for themselves. We have discovered places in Virginia Beach
that we never knew existed. Lastly, I was asked to chair a committee to get out a new church directory and I
would like to take advantage of this opportunity to thank the many volunteers who helped. To Sharon Kilby who
got all those ladies to spend hours on the phone asking parishioners to make photo reservations. To Mary Ann
Nash who was able to get all those volunteers to act as hostesses and continued helping even when her husband
was in a serious accident. To Ralph Thomann who was everywhere with his camera and then did a superb job of
putting together the Activity Sheets for the directory. To all who helped and whose names I haven’t mentioned,
I give a great big Thank You.
